We are excited to announce the launch of our seventh magazine as scheduled!
We have launched the FLKW Vol.7 in digital and printed formats on 28th February 2025. They are available from the 'Subscribe' page of our website. Our subscription options are Basic Plan / Standard Plan / Classic Plan; the latter two plans offer access to either a digital magazine or a copy of the printed magazine.
What a large volume of magazine FLKW has become! From Vol.1, with 68 pages, we launched Vol.7, which has 84 pages. Women's kendo is developing and 2024 saw four major events that will mark its history:
The 19th WKC with the women's category extended to spread across 3 days. At the same event, for the first time, female referees were appointed.
The first All Japan Women's Kendo 7-dan Tournament was held by the Yamanashi Kendo Federation.
All Japan Women's Kendo Championship was held simultaneously with the All Japan (Men's) Kendo Championship at Nippon Budokan for the first time.
The 2nd Women Aki Taikai held in France saw women-only referees on all shiaijo, an event seen in Europe for the first time.
Our magazine articles cover the above, written by Kate Sylvester and Robin Jakuen, our regular writers and the FLKW editor.
Not on the front line of the event, but the All Japan Kendo Federation awarded Yūkōshō to a woman for the first time. We would like to congratulate Fujino Tamae sensei for this prestigious award.
Paul Budden's article on Ella Hattan reveals her teacher, Thomas Hoyer Monstery, a pioneer in encouraging women to take up sword fighting in 19th-century America.
There are many more articles to share with you, including one technical review on kendo for high-graded women, in the format of an interview with Kōda Kunihide Hanshi.
We hope you will enjoy this large volume. Let us know what you think!
